Artist Cottage & Little Artist Cottage - Karoo Style Self Catering Accommodation in Sutherland, Northern Cape, South Africa
The Artist Cottage & Little Artist Cottage in Sutherland are typical of historic "Karoo-style" building and has been renovated without losing its authentic "Karoo" feeling, therefore don't expect perfect doors and windows!
Guests will experience the tranquility of the beautiful surroundings with historic Karoo accommodation. The Artist Cottage is the main cottage that can accommodate up to 5 guests while the Little Artist Cottage can accommodate up to 2 guests.
Sutherland is an excellent base to explore the wild and rugged countryside of the Roggeveld plateau and the many mountain passes that link the town to the surrounding lowland areas. Probably the most well-known of the mountain passes is situated on the R354 south towards Matjiesfontein, that cuts through a mighty cleft in the Roggeveld Mountains five kilometres from Sutherland.
The Artist Cottage and Little Artist Cottage are ideal for that weekend away from the city, and spending some quality time with family and friends. Both cottages can be booked together or separately.
Artist Cottage
Artist Cottage is the main cottage which can accommodate up to 5 guests and is ideal for a family.
The Cottage consists of a main bedroom (double bed), en-suite bathroom and a loft upstairs with a double bed & single bed, enclosed toilet and a victorian-style bathtub. Access to the loft is via a steep staircase and guests are advised to use with caution (as with any other staircase).
There is also a lovely indoor fireplace, kitchenette, dining area and a dining table. Guests will receive a complimentary case of wood, blitz, coffee,tea, cremora, sugar for your first evening.
Little Artist Cottage
Little Artist Cottage is separate from the Artist Cottage, and can accommodate up to 2 guests with a warm and cozy atmosphere.
The cottage consists of 2 three quarter beds, bathroom, indoor fireplace and a kitchenette. In the evening stargazing or socializing can be enjoyed with a typical outside karoo style fire pit.
Guests will receive a complimentary case of wood, blitz, coffee,tea, cremora, sugar for your first evening.
Things to do around Sutherland
Sutherland is home to SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, which is the second largest optical telescope in the world. SALT is a popular tourist attraction and definitely worth a visit.
The town itself is historic, quaint and quiet. If you enjoy spring flowers, September is a good time to visit.
You could then also explore the Tankwa-Karoo National Park, which has beautiful spring flowers and is just around the corner from Sutherland.
The high altitude of Sutherland is a popular choice for athletes and cyclists to enhance their fitness levels and endurance.
