Discovering the Beauty and Diversity of Namaqualand

Are you adventurous and appreciate the rarities of life? Then head to the glorious Namaqualand where you will discover a colourful landscape enriched with very distinctive plant life, unique climate and diverse cultures. It's a treasure chest of nature's wonders, awaiting your discovery.

Namaqualand is known for the annual springtime flower explosion that takes place between August and September. During this time, the countryside is transformed into a spectacle of beauty with fields that are filled with a vast array of different flower species in exotic colours. But that's not all... Namaqualand also has an abundance of sites to see and things to do.

Situated 600km north of Cape Town and located on the N7, deep within a low valley that divides the granite domes of the Klein Koperberge (Small copper mountains), is Springbok - the heart of the Namaqua region. Initially named "Springboksfontein" and shortened in 1911 to Springbok, it is the principal town of Namaqualand. It is the industrial and cultural centre of Namaqualand, owing its existence to copper mining that started in here 1850.

A wealth of history is housed and documented at the local Synagogue that was built in 1929 which now houses the Namaqualand Museum. To the north of Springbok is the Smelting Furnaces that have not been used since 1871. Next to the Synagogue, is the beautiful old Dutch Reformed Church - or Klipkerk (Stone Church) as the locals refer to it - built-in 1877. In the centre of town, there is a small koppie known as Monument Koppie which is surrounded by Anglo-Boer War monuments.

There are also many reserves and parks nearby like the Skilpad Wildflower Nature Reserve which showcases the regions many flower and succulent species. The Richtersveld National Park - the only Desert Park in South Africa - also has a wealth of activities that one can take part in. Take on the challenging hiking trails, attempt the tricky 4x4 routes, go canoeing or rafting and get spectacular views of the Orange River.

Apart from hiking trails and mountain biking routes, the nearby Goegap Nature Reserve is also filled with an abundance of different bird, mammal and amphibian species.

To experience the true hospitality of the 15000 residents of Springbok, stay at one of the many B&B's and guest houses in the area. Be it a family trip or just a quick getaway by yourself, Naries, Mountain View Guest House, Namaqua Game Lodge, and Springbok Lodge will make you feel at home. The town also has a number of restaurants that have old fashioned hospitality and heart meals.

One thing is certain, the richly diverse Namaqualand demands visitors to slow down, relax and spend their days trying to unearth all its many wonders.
