Eksteenfontein
Geography and History
Eksteenfontein is a settlement in the Richtersveld World Heritage site in the Northern Cape province in South Africa. Eksteenfontein is named after Ds Peter Eksteen who served the first church congregation in 1945.
No one had any idea then, that their new home – the Richtersveld – would one day be recognised as one of the foremost floral destinations in the world. This botanical wonderland became a World Heritage Site, declared for its natural and cultural importance, in 2007.
The town is mostly populated by a group of people originally known as ‘Bo-Sluis Basters’ who settled there in the 1940’s as a result of the apartheid’s separatism policies of the day. Today the Eksteenfontein community has become very close-knit and thrive on stock farming and working on the various diamond mines in the Richtersveld.
